FAQs - Diet and Food
What about the impact of diet and food choices on the climate crisis?
This is an excellent question.
ReplaceNow focuses on impact. We are trying to expose the simple but under-reported fact that the vast majority of the problem comes from burning fossil fuels for energy. In this country, 85% of our emissions come from dirty electricity, transportation and heat. Only 9% comes from agriculture. To avoid a climate crisis, we must completely transition our energy systems to clean renewables.
Food, diet, plastic pollution, land management - all these are clearly important issues that are part of the climate problem and those issues deserve attention. It is true that the choices we make about the food we purchase, buying local products, and wasting less food can make some difference - just like recycling or properly inflating our tires has some benefit. However, it is critical that those issues and those actions don’t distract us from where the vast majority - 85% of emissions come from - burning fossil fuels. Especially since there are clear, cost effective alternatives available today and because consumers have an essential role to play in transitioning our energy systems to clean energy.
It is critical for all of us to become aware of our direct energy consumption, to understand the impact of those energy choices and to embrace the alternatives that are here today. Simply put, we need to stop burning fossil fuels for our electricity, to power our cars and to heat our homes or power our tools.
We want to keep our message focused on those 85% of emissions. We want to help consumers understand the immediate, transformative and lasting impact they can make by taking Replace actions to eliminate the sources of emissions in their lives.
